Staff and Resources

Ann Knox

is a 1975 graduate of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, and a certified educator in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Prior to beginning her work at the Library in 1989, Ann served as Director of Christian Education at churches in Florida, Arkansas and Virginia and as Director of Admissions and Alumni/ae Affairs at PSCE.  Ann maintains the children's literature and faith and film blogs for the Christian Education department and has a strong interest in identifying ways that technology can be used  for teaching and communication.
Lisa Janes

is a native of Richmond, Virginia and joined the William Smith Morton Library as a student worker in 2005. She received her Master of Divinity Degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 2008. Her experience as a student worker at Morton Library allowed her to work in areas such as Circulation, Cataloging (mending and preparation), and eventually the Instructional Resource Center. Besides her current work in the IRC, Lisa is the Public Services Specialist in the area of Interlibrary Loan and Extension Services.

Come to us for help with your classes and projects !

As Director of the IRC, Ann is a member of the public services team that can help you learn how to use our catalog to find media and curricula, consult with you about materials to support an academic project, or help you identify teaching material for a local church setting.

Along with Lisa Janes, public services associate, we're happy to see you with your questions and suggestions.

Using our Library's online catalog to find media & curriculum materials

All of the varied elements in the IRC collection -- DVDs, videos, audio recordings, classroom teaching materials, and so on -- are listed in our Library's online catalog.  You can search for them yourself at any time, even when our staff is unavailable.  There is a detailed text tutorial and two video tutorials to help you get the most out of our catalog.

Cleaning of CD and DVD discs

It doesn’t take many scratches for an audio or video disc to be rendered unplayable.  A quick search on the internet will offer many solutions for your scratches : toothpaste, bananas, or Vaseline, to name a few!  The IRC has a better solution.

Bring your scratched discs to us and we’ll use the professional machine that keeps our discs in great shape to renew your compact discs or digital video discs.  (Very deep scratches may not be able to be removed.)

We clean discs every Friday and the cost for patrons is $.50 per disc.  Drop your discs off at the IRC during business hours during the week and we will have them back to you no later than Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  Questions?  Contact Ann Knox.

RESOURCES

Paul Tillich / Reinhold Niebuhr audio recordings collection

The William Smith Morton Library is an authorized distributor of the lectures of Paul Tillich and Reinhold Niebuhr on compact disc. You may order copies of these audio recordings through the Instructional Resource Center.

New media resource : Counseling and Therapy in Video

The Library has purchased a one year video streaming license for the Alexander Street Press Counseling and Therapy in Video collection.  This collection will be used in pastoral care courses during the 2011-2012 and is one way that the Library will continue to offer media resources to faculty and students. Union and BTSR students and faculty now have access to this streaming collection of counseling videos.

You can get to the collection by clicking the CTIV icon on this page or at the IRC home page.  If you are in the Library or connected to the UPSem network on campus via Ethernet, you will be taken directly to the resources where you can watch entire videos online or create your own clips.

If you are off campus or connected to the UPSem network wirelessly, click on the CTIV icon, and when presented with the EZProxy authentication screen, please log in as you do to get to our online databases.  UPSem students and faculty will use their network user ID and password, and BTSR students and faculty will use the login information provided when registering as a library patron.

For more detailed instructions about how to use this collection, please see the Help Pages on the CTIV site.  If you have further questions about how to use this collection, particularly in saving and sharing your video clips, please contact Ann Knox in the Instructional Resource Center at aknox@upsem.edu or (804) 278-4324.

The Multimedia Creation Lab

The Multimedia Creation Lab (MCL) offers the Union Seminary community a dedicated space to explore the use and creation of digital multimedia objects for instruction (such as podcasts, videos, etc) in the seminary and the church. The MCL was designed using equipment and software at a "consumer" level in hopes that the tools and skills used in the lab would not be out of reach for individuals or congregations.

If you have a project in mind that involves teaching or distribution of information through digital media, come and talk it over with Ann.
